Life from the Park Bench

Morning conversations and viewpoints from Park Bench from not the last of the ‘ Last Summer Wine’ but more of the ‘ Last of the Hand Pumped Tetleys ‘

On the 3rd of October 2024 I shared the following post on Facebook

I invite you to join me, Mark O’Brien, for an invigorating walk and uplifting conversation that will surely enhance your mood and brighten your day!

Starting every weekday on Monday, October 7th through Friday, we’ll gather at 5:45 AM and return by 7:15 AM, meeting outside the Whinney Moor Hotel at the Horbury Road end of George Green Road.

Together, we’ll enjoy a picturesque walk-through Thornes Park, covering about 4 miles—an experience that promises to boost your spirits.

This is a wonderful chance to meet new friends and reconnect with familiar faces while focusing on your personal aspirations, whether that’s improving your fitness, shedding some pounds, or simply relishing the outdoors while socializing.

Just wear something comfortable and warm this time of year, bring along a water bottle, and get ready to chat! And if no one else shows up, I’ll still be here, as always, Billy No Mates, enjoying the early morning solitude.

Hope to see you on Monday!

If you plan to join me, be great if you could please send me message on here or to 07736157050

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Fast forward to today, January 9th, 2025, and I’m no longer “Billy No Mates.” Over the past three months, I’ve had the pleasure of walking with ten different people, but now a solid trio of us—myself, Craig, and Paddy—has formed a close-knit group.

As you can imagine we’ve talked a lot of B****** however

Our conversations have been entertaining, covering a wide range of topics from the Miners Strike to Rugby League and Rugby Union, parenting tales, historical debates, and even the quirks of local wildlife. We’ve discussed figures like Dennis Skinner, Harold Wilson, and Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Donald Trump, Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner  as well as sports legends like Don Revie and Bill Shankly, Bertie Mee, Marcello Bielsa to name but a few.

And yes, we’ve even touched on the lighter side of life, including the first fart of the day—though that’s a different story altogether!

And why do you get Seagulls in Thornes Park as its at least 80 mile from nearest coast are they lost?

Beer- Westgate Run- Heppys – Monday Mecca – ABC Minors – (showing our ages here)

Sex Pistols, Northern Soul, Aretha Franklin and Abba!!

Overall, it has been a fantastic experience, and our two-hour mornings fly by without any disagreements so far!

I believe it’s safe to say that we have all greatly benefited from the camaraderie, discussions, playful banter, and mutual support we’ve shared. Keeping this in mind, we would like to extend an open invitation for you to join us. And rest assured, it’s not a competition—no matter your current fitness levels, everyone is welcome! 😁 we will keep our routine going every morning at 6 AM.
